Call for Expressions of Interest

We are now accepting expressions of interest to host the 2014 emma conference and the 2014 emma...

There are two Association needs for which the Board is keen to request your support and involvement.
As you know, every second year EMMA hosts a summer school for Ph.D. students. Last year this was hosted by the University of Zurich and produced by Bjørn von Rimscha. He has graciously volunteered to field questions and accept notifications of interest from any member and institution that would be interested to host the 2014 EMMA summer school. So we are asking interested individuals to please
. The Board will review the options and contact the 'applicants'. Our goal is to collaboratively decide on a best choice for 2014 and announce this during the 2013 conference. The institution selected to host summer school will be invited to join the board as the colleague who will be mainly responsible for producing the event. This is a one-year appointment with full voting rights and all attendant privileges. So volunteering to host summer school is not only an appreciated service to the EMMA community, and especially important for the next generation of members and contributors, but is also an opportunity to shape development of the association and collaborate in decisions about policy and performance in the future.

Along the same lines, the Board is inviting expressions of interest for hosting the EMMA 2014 conference. This has become increasingly attractive for many of our member institutions, providing a valuable opportunity to introduce your university, department and program to our international community. It’s obviously an important venue for promotion and networking, and is something most university administrations look upon rather favorably these days. The conference host has the key role in formulating the conference theme, setting the dates for the conference, and proposing special events during the conference. Hosting the EMMA conference is an attractive opportunity to build domestic relations with industry representatives and funding foundations. As with summer school, the colleague who is mainly responsible for producing the conference will be nominated to the board, with full voting rights and all attendant privileges.
. Again, we plan to announce the 2014 conference venue during the June conference.

Interested individuals and institutions should please
Eklöf for information about how to submit an expression of interest. She will collect the candidates and forward everything needed to the rest of the Board.

On behalf of the EMMA Board,
With Best Wishes for 2013,
Gregory Ferrell Lowe

Christian S. Nissen receives the emma award 2012

Christian S. Nissen delivered the 2012 emma Lecture on Media Management as the finale of the emma...

Christian S. Nissen was the first Director General recruited from out side the firm to serve as the CEO of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation. He was also the first Director General to be sacked by the Board of DR, due to political disagreements about the role of public media journalism in relation to government. But Christian is not bashful about having been sacked. His attitude parallels an aphorism in Silicone Valley where they say: “if you haven’t gone bankrupt at least once you haven’t really been trying”.
Christian earned a Master of Arts in social science in 1972 from the University of Copenhagen, and then a second degree in political science from the University of Aarhus. He began his career as Associate Professor in International Politics at the University of Copenhagen and has worked in various management positions for Danish public administration, including a period at the Ministry of Finance and another as Chief Financial Office for the National Museum of History in Denmark.
He has also been an active contributor to the intellectual development of public service media, beginning in the period between 1994 and 2004 as Director
General of DR and during which time he also served as Chair of the Digital Strategy Group for the European Broadcasting Union.
Today Christian has returned to academia and is Adjunct Professor in Management at the Copenhagen Business School. He also contributed his talents
and experience as Research Associate for the Media Management and Transformation Centre in the Jönköping International Business School in
Sweden. He is a member of the Editorial Commission for the Open Society sponsored by the Soros Foundation, serves as Chairman of the Board for
Roskilde University, and is a member of the Board of Directors for CARE International in Geneva.
Christian has authored articles in Danish and English, and contributed editorial service in the production of two recent books in English, the 2006 publication
titled: Making a Difference: Public Service Broadcasting in the European Media Landscape; and most recently the 2011 title from NORDICOM: Small Among
Giants: Television Broadcasting in Smaller Countries.
