MMTC at JIBS hosted an international doctoral summer school from 11 -15 August.
European Media Management Association (emma) Doctoral Summer School is a biannual event that provides doctoral students a unique opportunity to learn from experienced researchers in the field of media management and receive individual feedback on their research. Doctoral students from New Zealand, USA, UK and Germany gathered in Jönköping to participate.
Over the past several years, media management has emerged as an academic field that is generating increasing scholarly interest. But because many scholars studying media lack any background in management studies, there is an understandable gap in knowledge about management theories and their applicability to the media context. The emma Summer School helped doctoral students to grow a necessary understanding of major management theories applicable to media management research.
The 2014 emma doctoral summer school discussed recent developments, surveyed important management theories, reviewed how these theories have been applied for studying media industries, identified gaps in theory and application that merit empirical research, and discussed possibilities and limitations of using these theories for different types of research questions.
Senior faculty colleagues from media and management teaching on the course were:
- Leona Achtenhagen, course leader of the summer school, Prof. of Business Administration, Jönköping International Business School
- Johan Roos, Professor of Strategy (cited more than 9000 times) and Dean of JIBS who has done a lot of research on media companies
- Olof Brunninge, Associate Prof. of Business Administration, Jönköping International Business School
Guest lectures from media practitioners were:
- Lovisa Hamrin, CEO Herenco Group
- Stefan Melesko, former Managing Director Dagens Nyheter and Associate Prof. at MMTC
